Gautham Menon looks so composed when we meet him at his quaint Besant Nagar office that it is a little unnerving. It would be surprising to learn that the director has been facing significant obstacles in his quest to have his most recent movie, Dhruva Natchathiram, which stars Vikram in the lead role, released. However, the film has finally set a release date of November 24 after being stuck in production hiatus for years, so Gautham can afford to smile wryly.

Dhruva Natchathiram

The director of Dhruva Natchathiram, Gautham Vasudev Menon, emphasised the similar theme of covert teams in both his film and Siddharth Anand’s Pathaan, saying he personally would enjoy seeing it in theatres. The story of Dhruva Natchathiram is very different from that of the SRK movie, Gautham told Galatta Tamil, pointing out that “in Pathan, there was more focus on Shah Rukh Khan and not the other characters in the film.”

Gautham also mentioned that after seeing Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Vikram, he modified Dhruva Natchathiram. “There were parallels between the way Lokesh presented the roles of Santhana Bharathi and Vasanthi and the shots we had taken for specific characters in the first cut of Dhruva Natchathiram. As a result, after seeing Vikram, I decided not to include those parts in DN. Such things are going to happen. For how long can we continue to work on a movie? Others will continue to make progress and move on.

In Dhruva Natchathiram, Gautham mentioned Malayalam actor Vinakayan, who plays the main antagonist, saying, “He delivered an impressive performance in Jailer, which resonated well with the audiences.” But I saw him differently (than Nelson, the jail director). In a specific scene in Jailer, he assumes a lowly stance, bending his knees and pleading. I never thought of him like that. I had an image of him as a sophisticated, fashionable person who speaks the local tongue.
