The International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF, and Education International (EI) work together to promote World Teachers’ Day. It honors the date on which the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation regarding the status of teachers was adopted, which was in 1966.
This 1966 recommendation established fundamental standards for teachers’ rights and obligations, as well as principles for their initial education, continuing education, recruiting, employment, and the circumstances in which they teach and pupils learn.
